As Christmas approaches, I find myself filled with excitement as I think about ideas regarding how to make the season magical for my children. What presents should I buy? How should I decorate the house? What traditions do I want to start for my children? I find myself quickly slipping into the more worldly aspects of Christmas instead of focusing on the real reason for the season. Thoughts of gifts, lights, and decorations fill my mind when thoughts of Jesus should be taking their place. So, I decided to write a different kind of Christmas list for myself this year. One that will help my focus remain on Jesus, God’s perfect Son, who came to this earth to bring hope for us. I hope this list helps me and possibly you too as we wade through Christmas this year.

As Easter approaches and we think about Jesus’ death and resurrection, I’ve been reading through the new testament accounts of His death so that I will have an awareness and thankfulness during this season of celebration. When you think of a celebration the first thing to come to mind isn’t usually death, but as I’ve been considering Jesus’ death, it has brought me to a place of not only a celebration but also an outflowing of thankfulness for what His death means for me.

My toddler, completely enthralled, was watching his dad clip his toenails and asked: “Do I eat toenails dad?” My husband and I both laughed (after my gag reflex subsided) at this question and let him know that it’s not a good idea to eat toenails. My son’s latest trend is to ask if he can eat various items – and no item is exempted from this question. Sometimes he asks over and over about the same item. He seems to be trying to determine what are good things to put into his body and what are bad. A couple of weeks ago, he was eating a donut and asked: “Is this good for my body, mom?” “No,” I said, “there are better things for you to eat.”

In the daily grind that is parenting, consider the things we do over and over that aren’t always fun but are necessary to keep our families moving forward – things like diaper changes, meal preparation, and laundry come to mind, among others. The repetition of these things happens so often that we sometimes do them without giving them too much thought. However, if we were to stop and think about the consequences of not doing them, then we realize their importance.
